Alice in Chains Release New Single

It’s been a little over five years since we’ve had some new Alice in Chains material.  And the wait was well worth it.  At least so far.  The new single The One You Know is one of the finest album teasers in the bands history.

I love the direction of the song.  Alice in Chains have always done the unexpected.  From coming back as a band post Layne Staley to the quality of the newest album.  This group keeps you guessing, ‘what bad ass turn will this band take?’  And this time it’s a heavy turn.  Alice has always been a heavy band.  But what I mean is really heavy, dissonant and progressive.  But it also retains that classic Alice in Chains pocket groove.  Complete with addictive Jerry Cantrell guitar riffs.  The bridge is amazingly melodic and more Alice in Chains than Alice in Chains.

When Alice in Chains made their comeback in 2009 it was clear that Jerry Cantrell was doing a lot of the lead vocals.  And this time around it’s no different.  Jerry takes the verses and then DuVall adds his vocal harmony on the second phrase of the verse and the chorus.  A classic formula for the band.  I think it’s a smart move too.  It lets the fan base know that it’s Jerry’s band and it can exist as long as he does.  Of course, there are a few ‘no Layne no Alice’ types roaming around but the quality of the new material has astonished most.  Not to mention the cool music video.  I usually don’t like music videos but this one kicks some serious metal ass.

I can’t wait for the album now.  Hopefully this song is representative of how great the album is.  It happened the last two times Alice released new material.  You just know that the album is going to be amazing.  Can’t wait to see them later this coming summer.  Be sure to catch them.
