The anticipated new release from Dream Theater, ‘A View From the Top of the World,’ has yet another teaser. ‘Invisible Monster’ is a unique combination of heavy, chill and melodic. It contains a ‘Falling Into Infinity’ vibe that is more than welcome.
The spacey guitar melody in the beginning gives way to a typical grandeur into. However, this time around, it’s quite a bit darker. As opposed to bright and emotional. Such as tracks like ‘Beyond the Veil’ from 2013’s self titled album. It almost has a Faith No More vibe. Even when the song moves into the first verse. Yes, it has yet another rendition of the classic John Petrucci chugs. Which some are finding to be a little tired. Personally I love them. And am always looking forward to what rhythm he comes up with. But the overall difference between this track and others is apparent.
The vocal melodies in the verses are something that’s a little different. Again, kind of going with that Faith No More sound. The song moves into the bridge which is an instantly recognizable Dream Theater sound. Double pedal drive with the mid-neck range riff that follows the 16th note groove. Then the vocal melodies and keys on top of that. The guitar solo is pure choice however. Perfect feel, perfect technical prowess, perfect placement of each note and how it fits into the song.
The track closes out with the chorus and there you have it. It’s not the greatest thing Dream Theater has ever done. But it is quite strong. ‘The Alien’ is certainly the more stimulating of the two new tracks. And I’m looking forward to hearing the eight string guitar work on some songs when the album comes out. But ‘Invisible Monster’ is a good one. And I’m curious to see how it fits within the rest of the album.
