The return of Fates Warning is upon us. Since their return in 2013 with the amazing ‘Darkness in a Different Light,’ Fates Warning has been killing it in the prog metal world. Which is only right seeing as how they basically invented the genre. And now 2020 is a little bit better because Fates has announced a new album, ‘Long Day, Good Night,’ and have a released a new single, ‘Scars.’ And it’s just freakin’ awesome.
The track opens with a haunting Ray Alder vocal melody. Then it drops hard into the intro. Another excellent mid tempo rocker from the Warning. The song follows a rather ABACAB model. Which the band has been mixing in with their more progressive, long tracks. It’s filled with sing along melodies, drop heavy guitars, thick heavy bass and phat drums. The breakdown after the solo is particularly tasty. Bringing in the ten ton heavy guitar tone that’s been present on the last two albums.
If ‘Scars’ is a taste of what’s to come, ‘Long Day, Good Night’ looks to be another winning Fates Warning album. A welcome addition. Who knows, maybe album number 13 will be their lucky one. The band is vastly underrated. Particularly when factoring their last two albums. It’s extremely well written rock that’s as ready for rock radio as Evanescence. And they never sacrifice their integrity writing this more accessible music. It’s a perfect balance. And the new album promises to be excellent.
‘Long Day, Good Night’ is scheduled for release on November 6th of this year.
