Another Grammy awards is in the books. And it’s getting worse and worse. The bias favoring certain genres and artists is more apparent than ever.
Believe it or not, there was actually a time when the Grammy’s honored as many musical genres as they could. Even if they didn’t get the winners right at times (looking at you Jethro Tull). But there was still inclusiveness in most genres. Best rock, metal, hip-hop, pop, country and even some jazz Grammy’s were all televised during the ceremony. Giving each genre it’s small due.
Now, the Grammy’s are all but a joke. Most televised genre’s have been replaced with gaudy, flaccid performances. Pushing, now, even best rock album out of the broadcast. It was a true staple of the airing. But all that’s displayed now is mere pop and rap. And the occasional pop-country moment. All in an attempt to boost ratings. Yet, they’re lower than ever. Which makes sense because they’re alienating large fan bases of entire genres. Gary Clark Jr. was the only artist that had anything resembling rock in any fashion. The dude can really play.
But the night was dedicated to Billy Eilish, Billy Eilish and Billy Eilish. To the point of her own annoyance. Why? Well, she was the highest selling artist of 2019. When in doubt, follow the money. And that’s really where the Grammy’s are now. Of course, you can argue that it’s always been that way. And that’s certainly always been a factor. But it was still a much more inclusive community that acknowledged a much broader scope of musical genres. Hopefully it will come back around. But the future looks bleak.
