There’s a trend happening in the music industry these days. New bands and artists in the rock/metal and hip hop/rap camps are usually doing one of three things: A.) They’re not using real instruments, have no knowledge of forming a craft with discipline and only care about being famous, B.) They’re trying really really really hard to ‘push’ the boundaries of music which often results in sacrificing song quality, or C.) They do indie rock. Enter Lust ‘N Lies, a new band out of Los Angeles (specifically Hollywood) that only cares about one thing; writing great, hard rock/heavy metal songs with phat groove and catchy, sing along melodies. The group is made of a classic quartet of drums, bass, guitar and vocals. They’ve got the chops, got the drive and got the look. They deliver timeless, hard rock music. Lean, three and half to four minute songs focused on subjects such as family issues and social conformity. My biggest fear as they become more well known is that they will be labeled a ‘throw back’ group. I hate the term ‘throw back’! This form of music is absolutely timeless and is more malleable than almost any other genre. Hard rock/Heavy metal has been around for 40 years because there are people who relate to the sound. No matter what generation they come from. Due to that fact alone, the term ‘throw back’ is obsolete. That being said, this 18 minute EP will leave any hard rocker satisfied and wanting more at the same time. The opening track ‘Baby’ is a fitting opener and an obvious choice for a single. However, all the songs have single potential with the exception of the exciting ‘Long Road’ which is placed perfectly in the middle of the record. ‘Ritual Song’ is an appropriate progressive hard rock piece for the band, stretching their abilities and boundaries. At the end of the day though, it’s ‘Father’ and closing track ‘The Gates’ that steal the show. Straight up funk, groove and metal mixed with a sing along melody and memorable lyrics. Delicious heavy perfection.
Father is great!
For all of those who take the time to read this over the past 50 years or so rock and roll has been influential in the framework and fabric of our society. Setting us apart from the rest of the world as free thinking, freedom fighters, believing that we could change the world..and as the political machinery tried hard to chain and subdue the sounds of r&r, it only grew louder until it became the monumental force that stands today transforming the lives of ordinary beings into legends and demi gods. Lust&Lies have all of the tools they need, a pure powerhouse of talent and their first ep, I am sure only leave you wondering what’s next to come…I am willing to bet we haven’t heard nothing yet………bc
I can tell you first hand…you haven’t heard anything yet.
