Metallica have once again shaken up the rock and metal world with a new single. Delivered in perfect unannounced Metallica fashion, ‘Lux Aeterna’ throws back to the ‘Tallica’s earliest days of ‘No Life ‘Till Leather’ and ‘Kill ‘Em All.’
The mid range charging riff is eternally classic Metallica. Original? Maybe not. Fresh? You bet your ass. Boasting the same excellent production as ‘Hardwired…To Self Destruct.’ ‘Lux Aeterna’ continues the thrash tradition of the big four. Lars’ high end double pedal is prominent on the track. As well as the snare. Along with a well mixed bass line provided by Robert Trujillo. Not to mention a classic Kirk Hammet face melting guitar solo.
As fans know, Metallica have been through many phases. They got back on track with 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic.’ After years of inner turmoil and poor production choices (‘St. Anger). ‘Hardwired’ continued the songwriting quality of the ‘Death Magnetic,’ but with a much sharper production and less compression. Letting the album breathe. But keeping the thrash tradition alive.
And now it appears that Metallica have found their late career groove. Which will continue in full on April 14, 2023 with the release of ’72 Seasons.’ Followed by a massive double night stadium tour with a slew of high profile opening acts. Including Five Finger Death Punch, WVH’s Mammoth and ‘Pantera.’ It’s going to trek all across the world and will appropriately take its time. Metallica are obviously older and need more time between shows to recuperate. And they’re taking full advantage of the amenities that their success has created. Crank it and enjoy the new track. A killer comeback.
