It’s been quite a year for Dolly Parton. The country legend was recently inducted into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame. And has subsequently learned about the diehard Dolly fans that exist in the hard rock and metal community. Names like Nikki Sixx, Steve Perry, Steven Tyler, Richie Sambora and even the living legends Paul McCartney and Ringo Star. Entitled ‘Rockstar,’ this album is looking like the definitive who’s who collaboration with Parton at the helm.

It is, without question, one of the heaviest albums of all time. Mainstream release or otherwise. And Pantera were just in the right mental state to release such a metal album. Heavy music was in a very strange place during the late 90’s. Either being ignored, or met with insane fanatical fandom. The divide between rock, rap and pop was beginning. And ‘The Great Southern Trendkill’ debuted as a reaction to that divide.

It’s been nine years since Winger have released a new album. For a while there, they were churning out some great material post reunion. Proving that they’re truly a cut above the rest of their peers. Some of which can barely keep a live act together. Much less release quality, if any, material. But in the past near decade, Winger went silent. But now they’re back in a big way. With some of their strongest ever material delivered in the aptly titled ‘Seven.’

It’s hard to imagine that it’s been seventeen years since Tool’s magnum opus record ‘10,000 Days’ hit the shelves. It’s album that’s out of it’s time. Being released during a rap and hip hop dominant musical environment. One that’s even more prominent today. But despite all the trends, ‘10,000 Days’ went number one. And would go on to become Tool’s signature album.

By 1981, Van Halen were the biggest rock band on the planet. The high octane energy, mixed with heavy rock, musical technicality, revolutionary guitar playing and appealing song writing made them the dominant band on the planet. The first three albums: ‘VHI, ‘II’ and ‘Women and Children First’ have now become cornerstones in rock folklore. But it was the fourth album, ‘Fair Warning’ that gave Van Halen the edge that sustained their hardcore fanbase for years to come.

By 1990, Black Sabbath were in a weird place. Tony Iommi was the only original member left in the band. But that didn’t stop him and an excellent group of og British metal heads from making some great albums. Neil Murray on bass, the insanely overlooked Tony Martin on vocals and the drumming legend himself Cozy Powell slayed. The first outing ‘The Eternal Idol’ was the strongest since ‘Mob Rules.’ The follow up ‘The Headless Cross’ was even stronger. And remains a fan favorite to this day. But the third installment ‘TYR’ really took the cake.

By the late 90’s and early 2000’s, Aerosmith were the biggest rock band in the world. Coming off of two consecutive number one albums and a massive number one hit with ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing,’ there were very few groups that could contend with their success. And despite all odds, Aerosmith had proven that they had the biggest comeback in not just rock, but all of popular music. The bad boys from Boston decided to keep the ball rolling with the now underrated ‘Just Push Play.’

L.A. Guns have been busy since the Traci Guns/Phil Lewis reunion. Their first album, ‘The Missing Peace,’ hit hard. And was a surprise success.
