Those questioning Post Malone’s rock credentials were quickly silenced the other day. The rapper, who was a rocker before, got some buddies together along with Blink-182’s Travis Barker to deliver a really strong cover set from Nirvana.
What’s shown through this is how talented Post Malone really is. I mean, the dude can sing. And he can play. He certainly does a way way better job with the songs than Wes Scantlin of Puddle of Mudd. Who a friend of mine compared his Nirvana cover of ‘About A Girl’ to Eric Cartman intimidating Kurt Cobain. Which is hilariously accurate. But Malone is essentially the opposite. He captures the listeners attention with a decently full set. Making believers out of skeptics. Sure, his rap isn’t my thing. But I have mad respect for this talented dude who’s truly a rocker at his core.
Rap is more lucrative. It’s what the record companies want you listening to. So it stands to reason why some of these talented rockers who tried breaking as rockers ended up in the rap game. I mean, Post Malone did end up blowing up once making the transition. But I think the time is right for this guy to do a rock album. A real rock album, not the poser rock that Machine Gun Kelley started doing. A heavy, bad ass, heavy groove rock album. With the soaring melodies that Malone is capable of singing.
Also, the set list for the show is perfect. A true Kurt Cobain approved list. You’ll notice the absence of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ That’s a strong choice to make. There’s so many other songs that deserve recognition. And they get theirs. Malone and co. rip through ‘Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle,’ ‘Come As You Are,’ ‘About A Girl,’ ‘Lithium,’ and ‘Territorial Pissings’ to name just a few. It’s an hour plus long set and the crew holds it down for the whole time. Plus, Malone’s dress, in honor of Cobain, is a very tasteful little adage. He nails it, they nail it, watch it, love it. There’s nothing else to do.
