The songbird of Fleetwood Mac has crossed the rainbow bridge. Christine McVie, the driving force behind much Fleetwood Mac’s massive success and many of their hits, has passed away at the age of 79.
Chrissy was one third of the vocal and songwriting power of the Mac. And wrote some of their most memorable tracks. As well as some of the biggest hits of all modern music. Only being rivaled in success by The Beatles and a few others. Early hits such as ‘You Make Lovin’ Fun,’ ‘Say You Love Me’ and ‘Songbird’ transcend beyond radio friendly rock. And into pure musical bliss. The duets with Buckingham like ‘Don’t Stop’ also ring with a vibrant bliss. She got a bit more experimental with ’79’s ‘Tusk.’ As did the rest of the band. But certainly didn’t sacrifice what made her songs iconic. Which is displayed well on the opening ‘Over and Over.’
Every band has a member that’s ‘the glue.’ And in Fleetwood Mac, it was undoubtably Christine McVie. And there’s no album that better displays that fact more than Fleetwood Mac’s massive 1987 comeback ‘Tango In The Night.’ When members of the band were falling apart, she stepped up and wrote some of the greatest radio hits of all time: ‘Everywhere’ and the incredible ‘Little Lies.’ And when Lindsay Buckingham stunned the band with an announcement of his departure during the tour meeting, she stepped up and filled in the gaps for the shows.
The band cooled off in the following years. Even though McVie contributed some killer tracks such as ‘Skies The Limit’ and title track for ‘Behind The Mask.’ Until the return of Buckingham with ‘The Dance.’ A live reunion document that chronicled the band’s 70’s heyday material. Shortly afterwards, she left officially and the Mac were left to their own devices. Which saw fruition with 2003’s ‘Say You Will.’ The only Fleetwood Mac album that doesn’t feature McVie in any fashion.
Eventually McVie re-entered the band and they would go on to sell out stadiums across the world. Until her death, Christine McVie lived and breathed quality song writing. Including a killer duet album with Buckingham. May she rest in peace. And thank you for the amazing emotions, melodies and songs.
