The most prolific supergroup of the last ten years have once again come together for another killer album. Appropriately titled ‘III,’ Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy keep their hot streak (pun very much intended) alive and well.
From ‘Xanadu’ to ‘The Red Wine,’ ‘III’ is loaded from top to bottom quality. Sometimes supergroups don’t work out like we think they will. We assume that putting mega stars together in a band will guarantee kick assery. But it doesn’t always work out. But with The Winery Dogs, it more than does. They have an immediately distinctive sound. One that truly takes advantage of each members strengths. And the second track ‘Mad World’ really captures those elements. Richie Kotzen’s hard rock/pop blues tendencies. Combined with Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan’s technical prowess make for yet another knock out of the park. ‘Breakthrough’ is a quality ballad. Even if the title is generic. The music isn’t.
‘Stars’ is the first sign of progressive elements on the album. That’s what makes ‘III’ different from the previous two records. There’s a significant amount of progressive tendencies happening that weren’t present. And the slight direction change pays off. The band doesn’t sacrifice their signature sound. It’s just expanded a bit. The closing track ‘The Red Wine’ really displays the vision. A gamut of addictive riffs, melodies and kick ass drums in a seven minute plus song. One that’s sure to get the hairs raising on even the most critical of hard rock fans. ‘Gaslight’ also exemplifies the band’s amazing technical abilities. Which are beyond comprehension at times. While ‘Lorelei’ displays how the Dogs can feel some emotional blues. It’s not all about shredding and showing off. It’s also about strong song writing. And The Winery Dogs do just that.
Overall ‘III’ is an excellent representation of passion, feel, technical ability and all around exciting hard rock. Are the song titles that original? No. Is the album title that original? No. But, in the wake of the pandemic. The fact that any of these veteran, gun slinging bands can come together so quick. And release such strong music. Is in of itself amazing. And ‘III’ is a prime example of what three talented musicians can do when they come together and simply create. Three and a half stars out of five. Crank it, live it, love it. Be sure to catch The Winery Dogs on their current tour. There’s some unreal deals available.
