Out of all the outspoken critics that live among the celebrity class, there’s perhaps no one more surprising and vocal than Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. After all, many fans of the 80’s hard rock genre tend to be on the conservative side. But Lee has stuck to his truth and isn’t afraid to show it.
The letter, written by Craig Alan Wilkins and shared by Tommy Lee via Twitter, has gone viral in recent days, but the letter itself was released on March 20th. It’s an insanely brutal account. And even though Lee didn’t write it himself, he is largely responsible for it going viral. And it is strangely worded in what seems like something Tommy Lee would write himself. His voice is in the words.
I know there’s a lot of people who think that rockers like Tommy Lee and such should ‘keep to themselves,’ and should ‘stay out of politics.’ But these aren’t regular times. Our president is a trashy, reality television host. Normally I would agree that most rockers, unless you’re in a politically motivated band like Living Colour or Megadeth, should generally stay out of politics. But when the president literally defends neo-Nazis then there’s going to have to be exceptions.
And you gotta give props to Lee for sticking with his point of view. You know there’s a lot of Motley Crue fans, and fans of the 80’s hard rock genre, who lean on the conservative end of the political spectrum. Particularly in the southern states, rust belt and mid-west. He runs the risk of alienating many fans. And I would expect a few of them to return their tickets and never listen to Motley Crue again. Although those numbers are sure to be in the vast minority. And who knows, maybe there’s some new fans on the horizon who are grateful for Tommy Lee’s candid attitude. Hats off to him for speaking his truth. Now, if he and the rest of the ‘Crue’ could be responsible and postpose their first month of the upcoming tour, we’d really be talkin’.
