First Extreme hit us with a new, kick ass single. Now, Winger are on board as well. With the announcement of their new album, aptly titled ‘Seven.’ And the release of a killer new track ‘Proud Desperado.’
Winger were always one of the most misunderstood bands of their era. In fact, they were always a cut above the rest. But like Mr. Big and Extreme, they’re mostly known for a ballad that they wrote. That doesn’t really represent the sound of the band as a whole. And as a consequence, got reamed out by the hard rock and metal community as ‘posers’ and ‘corporate shills.’ But nothing could be further from the truth. Upon a more thorough inspection you’ll find that Winger and the like are truly world class. Some of the best singing, guitar playing and drumming you’ll ever hear. Riff after riff and groove after groove. It’s not all about technicality, but also writing catchy, strong material.
And while many of Winger’s peers have fallen by the wayside (in terms of quality at least), they’ve pushed on and kept writing great songs. Despite only releasing an album every five years on average since their reunion. And it looks like we’ve got another banger on our hands. ‘Proud Desperado’ is a killer riff. With the signature Winger time changes during the solo jam. Reb Beach truly gives meaning to having a Floyd Rose. Rod Morgentein’s drumming is, of course, spot on as always.
But it’s really Kips voice that will throw off most. It’s still there 100%. Sure, maybe the band writes in drop D more now because they’re older. But his tone, high notes and breath control are still as good as ever. The song writing is clearly on point. And to top it all off, original keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Paul Taylor has returned. Making this comeback all the more sweeter.
